RUMPELSTILTSKIN: UK AMATEUR PREMIERE
by Matt Harvey and Thomas Hewitt Jones
Playing dates: December 3rd-10th (including matinee on 10th)
The 2016 Criterion season ends with the UK amateur premiere of an exciting new work: the classic Grimm’s fairytale “Rumpelstiltskin” told in a witty new musical created for the Theatre Royal Bath in 2014. Written by performance poet Matt Harvey and award-winning composer Thomas Hewitt Jones, the show is performed by a cast of just four characters: a loose-tongued Miller, his feisty and idealistic daughter Emily, a dashing young King hungry for tax revenues - and the mysterious woodland creature of the title, who can spin straw into gold…. if you’re prepared to pay the fearsome price.
It’s a funny, fast-moving family show that is designed to entertain children from 7 and above - and the theatre-savvy adults who accompany them.
“this wonderful adaptation [combines] great songs, a wonderful script and set pieces that produce as good an example of family theatre as you're likely to see.”
“Hewitt Jones’s score has a jaunty charm and Harvey’s lyrics display genuine wit…. a family show that’s trying to do something different, and which does it in a distinctive, off-the-wall style.”
Rich Warren and Deb Relton-Elves will co-direct, with Bill Bosworth as Musical Director.
